Oil cleaned up after spill from boat on Patapsco PASADENA

June 28, 1993

A crew of environmental workers spent most of yesterday cleaning up 25 gallons of oil that spilled from a workboat at the Pasadena Boatel and Beach Club on the Patapsco River.

By the time the leak from the 25-foot powerboat was discovered about 10:20 a.m., bilge and waste oil had spilled into the water and onto 13 nearby boats.

Chief Petty Officer Chuck Collins, a Coast Guard spokesman, said the floating pump in the boat's bilge area between the hull and lower deck apparently malfunctioned.

The spill from the workboat, which was pushing a barge full of pilings, was contained within an area about 200 yards by 50 yards, he said.

The basin of the boatyard off Knollview Drive was closed until late in the afternoon.

The boat owner hired a cleanup crew to remove the oil from the boats. The Coast Guard and Maryland Department of the Environment helped with the cleanup and made sure the oil did not spread.
