Local author Richard Stack will tell the stories behind his stories and introduce the star of his books, Josh the Wonder Dog, 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Brooklyn Park Library, 1 E. 11th Ave. Mr. Stack, of Glen Burnie, is the author of "The Doggonest Vacation" and other children's books. His appearance is part of the library's Summer Reading Program and is free and open to preschoolers and children entering grades one through six in the fall. Registration is not required for the hourlong show, but seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Mr. Stack's books will be available for purchase and autographing after the program.

* Parents new to the neighborhood should register their children at their prospective schools as soon as possible. Belle Grove, Brooklyn Park and Park elementary school offices are open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The telephone number for Belle Grove, 4502 Belle Grove Road, is 222-6589. Office hours for Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle Junior High School and North County High School are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. * On Sunday, Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church, 110 Townsend Ave., will welcome its new pastor, the Rev. Charlotte Hendee. A welcome reception will take place July 11 after the 10 a.m. service.

* St. John Lutheran Church, 226 Washburn Ave., will begin its summer schedule Sunday with just one service at 9:30 a.m. There will be no Sunday school. The regular worship schedule will resume Sept. 5.

* The YWCA of Greater Baltimore will be offering swimming lessons beginning today through Aug. 20 at the North Linthicum Recreation Pool. For information about class times and to register, call 768-2500.

* Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association is accepting registrations for the fall soccer season. Boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 15 are invited to join. Register at the Sugar Shack at the 10th Avenue fields between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, or from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday.

* Harbor Hospital Center offers a breast screening program for women with or without symptoms of breast disease. Trained staff members perform a 15-minute breast examination procedure and a nurse provides education about breast self-exam. This exam is available to all women regardless of their ability to pay.

Eligible women may receive the service free. It is for uninsured women, or women who have insurance but no mammogram benefits. The American Cancer Society recommends regular mammograms for all women 35 years and older, especially if they have a family history of breast disease. To make an appointment, call 347-3838.

Summer volunteers are still needed for the center's Junior Volunteer Program, which is open to teens 15 years or older who have completed the ninth grade. Participants can learn new skills and earn community credits. For more information, call 347-3478.
