* Members of the Carroll Garden Club honored past presidents, honorary and associate members at a picnic lunch at the home of Mrs. Russell Law. Those honored: Mrs. Luther S. Bare, Sr., Miss Dorothy Zumbrum, Mrs. Russell Law, Mrs. A. Earl Shipley, Mrs. Ray Hollinger, Mrs. Herbert H. Liggon, Jr., Mrs. M.K. Talley, Miss Mildred Zumbrum, Mrs. Edgar G. Barnes, Mrs. Lester N. * One of Carroll County's most outstanding citizens, Harry G. Berwager, died last evening at his home. He was 59 years of age. Mr. Berwager served as court stenographer for 28 years and from 1930 until 1942 was Register of Wills. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army on the Mexican border. -- Democratic Advocate, June 18, 1943.

* The shooting of firecrackers which began over a week ago, promises, unless checked, to surpass the shooting heard in town for the past few years. When the nation is enjoined to observe the Fourth in a different way, it would appear feasible to expend this money, which in the aggregate would amount to considerable, in supplying our soldiers with just that much more ammunition and thereby contribute toward winning the war. -- Union Bridge Pilot, June 21, 1918.

* Two boys, Aubrey Ecker and brother, captured what I would call a groundhog last week. It whipped a couple of dogs before they captured it. They disposed of it to Mr. Thad. Fleming, who said it was not a groundhog. He put it in a box cage, to which it bid adieu and also to Mr. Fleming, after two nights and a day's stay by gnawing a hole through it. -- American Sentinel, June 24, 1893.
