Volunteer work: Karl will be spending at least part of his summer vacation doing volunteer work for North Arundel Hospital in its Junior Volunteer program.

Karl, 16, began volunteering at the hospital last summer.

According to Karl, hospital volunteers need no particular medical skills, just a willingness to do good work and "know the basics."

Karl primarily delivers supplies throughout the various departments of the hospital, including the intensive care unit where his mother, Diane Clodfelter, is the nurse manager. When he works at the hospital, he usually is there for 8 hours -- matching his mother's schedule as he rides to and from the hospital with her.

This year, as with last, Karl will be a counselor for the hospital's Camp Superkids for children ages 6 to 12 suffering from asthma. He will be responsible for overseeing a group of three to four youngsters as they participate in games and activities.

The five-day camp is co-sponsored by the American Lung Association and held on the campus of the Anne Arundel Community College. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 through Aug. 6.

"The camp helps give kids with asthma confidence that they can participate in physical kinds of activities," Karl says.

Karl says his future plans "sort of" have to do with the medical field -- specializing in genetic research.
