Residential construction leaps in Las Vegas

OUESTION: In what region is homebuilding most active?

ANSWER: Florida, the mountain states and the "oil patch" region have experienced the most homebuilding activity in recent months, according to a report from U.S. Housing Markets. Overall, the number of building permits for residential construction has been steadily increasing in most regions of the country since the fall of 1991.

The most dramatic increase of residential construction in a single metro area is in Las Vegas. Single-family homebuilding permits jumped by 30 percent over last year's volume. Other big increases are reported in Denver, Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., and pTC Salt Lake City.

Head of household lives on houseboat

QUESTION: Can I claim head-of-household, living on a houseboat? I live alone, except when my children come home from college on vacations.

ANSWER: To qualify for the head-of-household status, an unmarried taxpayer (or abandoned spouse) must maintain a home in which a child or dependent relative resides. Your aquatic residence will not disqualify you from this filing status.

If the houseboat is your children's legal residence, temporary absences at college will not cause you to lose this filing status.
