NL -- Suspended Rick Trlicek of Los Angeles and Gary Sheffield of San Diego for three games each for a beanball incident on June 10. Suspended Jose Bautista of Chicago for three games for intentionally throwing at and hitting Mark Carreon of San Francisco on June 11. Suspended Ramon Martinez of Los Angeles for five games for hitting Charlie Hayes of Colorado and Hayes for three games for fighting after he was hit by the pitch on June 15. Suspended Keith Shephard of Colorado for seven games for hitting Cory Snyder of Los Angeles with a pitch on June 15. All the suspended players also were fined undisclosed amounts. All except Shephard have appealed and will continue to play pending hearings. Upheld a three-game suspension for Howard Johnson of New York for bumping umpire Jerry Layne on May 21. Johnson will serve his suspension when he returns from the disabled list.

Boston Red Sox -- Placed P Roger Clemens on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 19. Purchased the contract of P Aaron Sele from Triple-A Pawtucket. Signed 1B Ryan McGuire.

Chicago Cubs -- Signed P Gamalier Castro and P Daniel Gil; IF Brett McCabe and IF Kevin Orie; and OF Vee Hightower and OF John Sauer.

Chicago White Sox -- Signed OF Billy Joe Hobert and 3B David Moore.

Basketball

New Jersey Nets -- Traded C Sam Bowie and a conditional second-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for C Benoit Benjamin.

Colleges

American International -- Named Bob LeCours football coach.

Arizona -- Promoted Jeff Hammerschmidt to full-time assistant football coach.

Miami -- Signed Ferne Labati, women's basketball coach, to a multi-year contract.

Hockey

Chicago Blackhawks -- Signed G Chris Rogles and G Christian Soucy.

New Jersey Devils -- Announced they will not offer a contract to C Peter Stastny making him an unrestricted free agent. Named Robbie Ftorek coach of Albany of the American Hockey League.

New York Rangers -- Named Colin Campbell associate coach.

F: San Jose Sharks -- Agreed to terms with LW Lee Leslie.
