MIKE STANTON, 11, son of James R. and Sandra Stanton of Fairfield Avenue in Westminster.

School: sixth-grader at Westminster East Middle School.

Honored for: Being the county winner of the Pam Basu Science Writing Competition, sponsored by the Maryland Science Center. He wrote a one-page essay about what science can do for him personally, and for the United States. As a county winner, he received a T-shirt, gift certificate, two free admission vouchers to the science center and two tickets to an Orioles home game. The science contest was named for Dr. Basu, a research scientist who was killed last year during a carjacking in Howard County.

Goals: "I want to be a scientist working with NASA at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida."

Comments: "I just have a big interest in science. You have to do a lot of experiments and you can do a lot of studies."

For the country, Mike said he wrote in his essay, science has led to improvements ranging from treatment of illness to creation of jobs.
