According to Little Abner's attackman Steve Marohl, this was rTC the year his team "wanted to gel together and get something going."

Yesterday at Johns Hopkins' Homewood field, Little Abner's gelled and then some, using a 7-1 third-quarter run to defeat Westchester, 15-8, for the Central Atlantic Lacrosse League championship.

Marohl, one of 16 former UMBC players on Little Abner's, scored two goals and had three assists en route to earning the game's Most Valuable Player Award. Mark Malczewski (UMBC) had four goals and Dave Kasemeyer (Loyola) had three goals and two assists.

"We just decided we wanted to do it," said Kasemeyer. "We just went out and played lacrosse and had fun."

Both offenses started the game hot, as each team scored three goals each in the first 4:50. But the defenses tightened and the game went scoreless for the next 6:32 until Westchester attackman Sean Bulger (Hofstra) scored off an assist from Don Connolly (Towson State) with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

Little Abner's defenseman Scott Morrison (UMBC) closed out the first period, scoring an unassisted goal with 1:04 left to tie the score 4-4.

Little Abner's opened the second quarter with three straight goals to build a 7-4 lead with 3:09 left in the half. Almost two minutes later, Connolly's goal for Westchester concluded the first-half scoring and made it 7-5.

In the third quarter, Little Abner's ran away with it, as Kasemeyer and Mark Malczewski each scored three goals to lead an offensive surge that gave Little Abner's a 14-6 lead at the end of the quarter. Westchester's only goal in the quarter came when a referee ruled that a Little Abner's defenseman touched the ball while standing inside the goal.

"I was worried we might run out of gas because of the heat," said Marohl. "But we came out strong and ran off a bunch of goals."

With the win, Little Abner's became the seventh different CALL champion in the past seven years. Marohl would like to give the title some stability.

"Having all these UMBC guys together creates a good situation," said Marohl. "We'd like to stick together for a couple years."
