Rick Normile leads the championship flight by three strokes but is receiving unexpected competition from Greg Ruark, a first-flight player, in the Baltimore Publinx Championship at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.

Shooting a career-best 1-over 72, Ruark is one stroke behind Normile.

Normile had two birdies and parred six holes on the back nine yesterday for a personal tournament-best par-71.

"I struck the ball real well," said Normile, who was playing on his home course. "The key was hitting 15 greens."

Ruark was placed in the first flight because of a 6.7 handicap. His handicap also disqualified him from the coming Maryland Amateur Golf Tournament, which only allows players with handicaps under 4.5.

On the fourth hole, Ruark faltered with a double bogey. Ruark rebounded with birdies on the next three holes.

Ruark attributed his turnabout to improved putting.

"I hit six one-putts and had only one three-putt," Ruark said. "For once, I didn't have any bad putts all day. Even the ones that didn't fall were good putts."

Charles Narciso, the defending champion, trails Normile in the championship flight with a 3-over 74. Narciso played consistently, parring 14 of the 18 holes.

Rick Siegman and Tom Lynn, a first-flight player, are also three strokes behind the leader.

The championship flight remains tight, as 22 of the 44 players broke 80 and are fewer than nine strokes off the lead.

Keith Henderson tops the second flight with an 8-over 79, and Alan Rigney heads the third flight with an 11-over 82.

The tournament shifts today to Forest Park Golf Course for a final round of 18 holes to determine the overall winner.
