Toys In The Closet

June 20, 1993|By Lita Solis-Cohen and Sally Solis-Cohen

Although they lament the state of modern toy manufacturing, Dr. Athelstan Spilhaus and his wife, Kathleen, keep a closet full of safe plastic Fisher-Price toys for when their 17 grandchildren visit.

"We don't let them play with the old ones, but we do encourage them to look at them," said Mrs. Spilhaus. "Then we bring out our video 'The Marvelous Toys of Dr. Athelstan Spilhaus,' so they can see how they work," she added.

The 80-minute videotape, showing 115 toys in action and narrated by Dr. Spilhaus, mesmerizes young children, according Mrs. Spilhaus, and protects both the vintage toys and the children from injuries. (It's $33.95 postpaid from Concept Videos, 5411 Berwyn Road, Suite 302, College Park 20740; (800) 333-8252).
