New Windsor man, 27, charged in sex assault

A 27-year-old New Windsor man charged with six counts of assault and sex offenses involving a 9-year-old girl, was held on $100,000 bond by a court commissioner yesterday.

Howard R. Malatt was arrested by state police and investigators of the Carroll state's attorney's child abuse section.

According to court documents filed in Carroll District Court on Wednesday, Mr. Malatt was at the home of a friend in Taneytown when he allegedly sexually abused the child after removing her panties and his pants.

Police charged the man with committing a second-degree sex offense, a second-degree sex offense with force, second- and third-degree sex offenses, perverted practice and battery.

Investigators are continuing to question children in the area where the offenses occurred, according to court papers.


* Taneytown: Engines from the Taneytown station responded for an auto fire on Route 832 at 11:29 p.m. Wednesday. They were out for 20 minutes.
