Sykesville girl wins state teen pageant

Nichole Sockriter, 15, of Sykesville, recently won the Maryland division of the America's National Teen-ager pageant.

The pageant is a scholastic competition in which participants are judged on academics, community service and poise.

Nichole, who will be a junior this fall at Seton-Keough High School in Baltimore, maintains a 3.25 average and is active in cheerleading and community service. She does volunteer work in her school office and with the elderly through her church, Holy Family Church in Randallstown.

She will represent Maryland in the national competition, which will be in August at Opryland in Tennessee. In addition to winning the all-expense paid trip to Opryland, she received a $1,000 scholarship for college, a full scholarship to John Powers Modeling School, a crown, a sash, a trophy and flowers. * Sykesville: Sykesville firefighters responded to investigate an alarm of fire in a building on Old Washington Road at 9:32 p.m. Monday. They were out for 44 minutes.
