Alumni are honored for school service

Five Western Maryland College graduates were honored recently for their participation in alumni and college affairs.

Meritorious Service Award recipients were Lee D. Lodge, Class of 1943; Mary Todd Griffiths, '48; R. Peter Urquhart, '58; Gordon B. Shelton, '68; and Dennis L. Peters, '78.

Mr. Lodge, a Frederick resident, has served as class president since the year of his graduation and has been a member of several alumni committees, including the reunion, nominating and reunion-fund committees. He has served as coordinator of his area alumni chapter.

Ms. Griffiths of Wernersville, Pa., served as a member of the college's board of trustees from 1976 to 1981. She was class secretary for six years beginning in 1963, and throughout the 1970s and 1980s was alumni association president-elect, national alumni fund committee chair, alumni association president, class chairwoman and admissions volunteer.

A resident of Lutherville, Mr. Urquhart is serving his second term on Western Maryland's board of trustees. Over the past 31 years, he has been class chairman, alumni association director and alumni visitor to the trustees, and a member of the alumni association undergraduate relations and class reunion committees.

Mr. Shelton, the current agent for his graduating class, has been involved in alumni affairs as class secretary and as a member of the national fund and class reunion committees. He lives in Towson.

Mr. Peters of Baltimore is continuing a term as alumni visitor to the trustees. His activities as an alumnus have ranged from chairing the alumni association nominating committee from 1987 to 1991, to membership in the young alumni affairs and class reunion committees. He also served as a volunteer for the college's Career Services program.
