Raffle winners are announced in Westminster

Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Company No. 1 has announced the winners of its recent annual raffle, drawn May 27 at the Carroll County Ag Center.

Winners were:

First prize: $10,000, Michael Rittase, Westminster.

Second prize: $1,250, Richard Bowen, Westminster.

Third prize: $1,000, Kenny Long.

Fourth prize: $500, Butch Devilbiss, Westminster.

Fifth and sixth prizes: $250, Joseph Heagy and Merle Shorb, both of Westminster.

Seventh through ninth prizes: $100, Marie Kunkel of Sykesville, Donald Groft of Westminster and Beverly Jordon of Hanover, Pa.

Zoning board makes decisions on traffic

The Carroll County Board of Zoning Appeals ruled on two area cases.

The board:

* Gave William C. Woods of Gettysburg, Pa., and Linda Woods of Westminster permission to park two refuse collection trucks and one recycling trailer at 3540 Arters Mill Road near Silver Run.

* Gave Union National Bank permission to add a fourth drive-through lane at its branch at 2926 Baltimore Blvd. in Finksburg.

Library workers to visit school

Representatives from the Carroll County Public Library will present summer book talks to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Charles Carroll Elementary School, 3719 Littlestown Pike, tomorrowin the media center.

The book talks, which will take place throughout the day, are designed to prepare students for summer reading.

POLICE

* Westminster: A resident of the first block of Shamrock Lane reported that someone tried to break into his home by prying open a sliding glass door about 3:50 p.m. Friday. Nothing was stolen.

A resident of Arters Mill Road told police someone shattered the rear window of his car while it was parked at the Crossroad Square Shopping Center on Thursday. Damage was estimated at $200.

A Finksburg resident's car was covered with motor oil Wednesday while it was parked in Westminster. Damage was estimated at $200.

FIRES

* Westminster: Westminster and Reese firefighters were dispatched to a house on Yorkland Road when occupants smelled electrical smoke in the building about 12:55 a.m. Friday. Units were out more than two hours checking for possibly fire spots and ventilating the house of the accumulation of smoke.
