YMCA seeks to build child care facility
The Severna Park YMCA is hoping to tear down the former Roman Catholic Church it owns to build a new child care facility, said chief operating officer Steve Hipley.
The YMCA has asked local citizen groups if they object to the plans, or if the church building has any historical value the Y should know about.
The Y plans to start raising money soon for this long-term goal of a new facility for its extensive child care programs, Mr. Hipley said.
"We have day care in at least 12 elementary schools, plus we have day cares at all major Y facilities," he said.
The Severna Park Y also is known for its extensive swimming
programs, which extend from infants through college age.
"We see this as a new rebirth of the Y's in Anne Arundel County," Mr. Hipley said. "We've had some difficulties in the past, but we want people to know the old management is no longer here. It's a different set of people, and we think the public is going to see some new things here."
