GEORGE BENSON of Annapolis

Volunteer's work: A longtime county resident and owner of Benson Motor Cars in Annapolis, Mr. Benson is proud of his community and has done what he can to support and improve it.

He has been a member of the Annapolis Downtown Rotary Club since the early 1970s and has served as its president. In recent years, he has served Anne Arundel Medical Center as a member of the Center's Foundation. When called upon two years ago to chair the center's "Celebrate the Future Campaign," Mr. Benson accepted.

The goal for the campaign is to raise more than $8 million for the medical center's construction of the Rebecca M. Clatanoff Woman's Hospital on Jennifer Road, to support the cardiac catheterization lab and for renovations to expand the downtown facility's intensive-care unit to 30-beds.

Mr. Benson praises the hospital's auxiliary, employees and board members, and local businesses, many of which have pledged money and support.

"We've had good support from banks, utilities, other car dealerships and a variety of small businesses," Mr. Benson said. "All have made contributions. A venture like this takes an effort from all parts of the community."

Mr. Benson has coordinated those efforts as Celebrate The Future chairman. He said he is optimistic about the campaign's future, but says the hospital will need more help from the private sector.

Volunteer's comment: "Whenever I'm asked, 'Who owns the hospital?' I tell them, 'No one owns the hospital; you and I own it, and it can only be as good as we make it.' "

Volunteers should not spread themselves too thin, he said, but should concentrate their efforts and work hard toward specific goals.

Organization's comment: "He's a true gentleman, in that he is humble, very modest, personally very charitable and does not ask anyone to do something he himself would not do," said Lisa Hillman, executive director of the Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation.
