Around the house

* When painting a room, keep a baby-food jar of paint on hand for touch-ups. This will prevent spills that are likely when you carry an unwieldy can of paint.

* Clean outside grill easily. When grill is warm, wipe clean with a crumpled wad of aluminum foil.

* Buff windows to a shine. A clean blackboard eraser rubbed over a dry, clean window will remove any lingering smudges.

* Remove perspiration stains from clothing. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to spot and rub. Launder as usual.

* For outdoor barbecues, use an ice bucket as a serving dish. It keeps cold and hot foods at the right temperatures and is unbreakable.

* Keep extra paper or plastic trash bags at the bottom of waste containers for quick replacement.

In the garden

* Try using an apple corer to dig up garden weeds; a hot-water bottle filled partially with water can provide a cushion for knees; curtain rods are a sturdy support for vines.
