BEL AIR -- Two former champions were among the four players advancing in the championship flight of the Women's Metropolitan golf tournament at Maryland Golf & Country Club in Bel Air yesterday.

One of the previous champions, medalist Cindy Peterka, made a curling 20-foot putt on the 15th green, and when opponent Cheri Cooper missed from 6 feet, it gave Peterka a 2-up margin, and she ended it with a par on the 17th. Earlier, she had two front-nine birdies in building a 3-up margin after nine holes, but Cooper rallied to within one after No. 14.

The other ex-champion, Andrea Kraus, won the first five hole against Lynne Hunter en route to a 4-and-3 win. Marty King, playing a course the first time for the third straight day, ran into more problems than in prior efforts, but eventually held off Gerry Quartner, 2 and 1. King was 3-down after six holes, 1 down at the turn, then won four holes to be 3-up after the 15th.

Sandy Persinger Pelisek had the easiest path to the semifinals, beating Joan Lins, 6 and 5. :Pelisek was four over par for the 13 holes, and was able to take advantage of some erratic play by her foe,who normally has a solid competitive game, especially for tournaments
