Led state gas tax unit

John K. G. Coleman, retired head of the Gasoline Tax Division in the state comptroller's office, died Monday of cancer at his Stevensville home.

Mr. Coleman, 72, retired in 1977 after working for many years in the comptroller's office.

John King Gladden Coleman was born in Chestertown and graduated from Chestertown High. He attended Washington College and the Merchant Marine Academy and later graduated from the University of Baltimore.

During World War II, he served in the Navy as a blimp pilot and then in the Army Air Forces.

He lived in Annapolis and then Severna Park for many years before moving to Stevensville 17 years ago.

Services were conducted yesterday at the Taylor Funeral Chapel in Annapolis.

Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife, the former Lynne L. Riley; a son, Alan Austin Coleman of Severna Park; a daughter, Wendy Lynn Todd of Glen Burnie; a brother, Alvin Erdman Coleman of Annapolis; and three grandchildren.
