Surplus food available to lower-income families on June 24 Butter, rice, meat to be distributed

Lower-income families can stock their larders with surplu butter, raisins, beans, apple sauce, meat and rice June 24 if they qualify for Operation Food Sharing.

Volunteers with the Anne Arundel Food Bank will distribute the food, declared surplus and purchased by the federal government to keep agricultural prices steady, at 25 sites in Anne Arundel County.

To qualify, families must participate in welfare, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Food Stamps Assistance, Medicaid or the Maryland Energy Assistance Program.

Families also can can qualify if they have a household income less than 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines. That means that to receive food, a family of two can earn no more than $266 a week and a family of four no more than $403.

Anyone interested in participating must bring some proof -- a food stamp or Medicaid card, for example -- of participation in those programs to the distribution site. Families also should bring two large grocery sacks.

Annapolis Housing Authority, Eastport Terrace and Annapolis Gardens.

Eastport United Methodist Church, 926 Bay Ridge Ave., Eastport.

First Baptist Church, 31 W. Washington St., Annapolis.
