Westminster's Knights battled through injuries 1993 ALL-CARROLL COUNTY BOYS TRACK TEAM Performer of the Year

Westminster track coach Bill Hill can go on and on about

junior jumping star Matt Knights.

Speed, power, technique and dedication are the most needed ingredients, and Hill says Knights has them all and more.

Knights, who specializes in the triple jump but also excels in the long jump, enjoyed a banner season after a four gold-medal day at the county championships (he set county meet records in the triple and long jumps along with being part of two winning relays).

It was then he showed yet another championship quality -- heart.

Knights suffered a lower back strain going into the regionals, but was able to compete at a high enough level to finish second in zTC the triple jump and third in the long jump. He followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at states.

It's those attributes that makes Knights The Baltimore Sun's 1993 Track and Field Performer of the Year in Carroll County.

"He started off with some tremendous efforts and then ran into some injury problems at the end," said Hill.

"Although being injured, he rested and rested and then rehabbed to still be able to compete at a very high level. A lower back sprain is a very difficult injury to come back from, but he did a tremendous job working through it."

Knights got serious challenges from teammate Steve Kahler and Francis Scott Key standout Scott Kreit.

Kahler came on strong with wins in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in the county and Central Maryland Conference meets, along with solid efforts at the regionals and states.

It was Knights' early dominance, strong will and genuine leadership qualities that separated him from the rest.

"He endured [through the injury] while others may have given up on the season," Hill said.

"Others see this kind of effort and say 'If he can do it, I can try. He's a great role model and washes over very well with the kids."
