* Haven Barnes, South Carroll, Jr., middle distance -- South Carroll's most reliable point-getter, Barnes followed up a solid sophomore season with an even better one as a junior. He edged F.S. Key's Scott Kreit to claim the county championship in the 400. In the states, he took sixth in the 400 and fourth in the 1,600.

* Josh Crone, F. Scott Key, Jr., pole vault -- Was consistently at 13 feet all season and won the state title with a jump of 13-6 -- second best at the state meet in the combined four classifications. Set a Monocacy Valley Athletic League record with a height of 13-8 -- a career best. Took second in states with a jump of 13-6 and won the county championship at 13-0.

* Christian Hochberg, F. Scott Key, Sr., discus -- A big part of F.S. Key's state title team, Hochberg won the county title with a throw of 136-3, easily outdistancing his competition. His best throw of the season was 143 feet.

* Steve Kahler, Westminster, Jr., distance -- One of coach Bill Hill's most reliable runners, Kahler came away with three gold medals at the county meet in the 800, 1,600 and 1,600 relay. Also claimed wins in the 800 and 1,600 at the Central Maryland Conference meet.

* Scott Kreit, F. Scott Key, Sr., sprinter -- Dominated the sprint events at the county championships -- winning the 100 and 200 -- and also claimed region and state titles in the 400. Kreit's biggest moment of the season may have come in anchoring Key's state title-winning 1,600 relay team.

* Ted Sanders, Liberty, Jr., hurdles -- Scored all the Lions' points this year in the state meet with third-place finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Won a gold medal in the county championship with a win in the 110 and was a close second in the 300. Also finished second in both events at the Central Maryland Conference meet.
