Children are invited to "Dive Into a Good Book" as part of the county library system's Summer Reading Program, June 14 through July 23.

The annual program, run at all 14 branches, is free and open to children entering grades one through six in the fall. Separate activities are planned for preschoolers.

Children may register at any point during the six-week program and proceed at their own pace.

When they register for the Summer Reading Program, children will receive a logbook and game sheet to chart their reading progress. Each week, the library will issue new activity sheets and stickers, which children can pick up when they re turn books and borrow new ones.

Each participant will receive a free pass to the Baltimore Zoo. There will be additional awards of food coupons to those who read 20 and 30 books. Program participants also have a chance to win free toys and trips to restaurants, and tickets to museums and amusement parks.

In addition to the reading program, the library has a number of activities planned for its branches.

Michael the Magician is returning with a whole new bag of comedy tricks. Storyteller, poet and weaver of fantasy, Marc Spiegel, will enchant and inspire children with his original stories, poems and songs. The well-known musical duo "Magpie" will promote marine ecology to children through song. Professional actors from Interact Stories on Stage will use props and costumes to bring a variety of interesting characters to life. Local author Richard Stack will bring Josh the Wonder Dog to discuss the stories behind his stories "The Doggonest Christmas" and "The Doggonest Vacation."

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Last year's program drew nearly 8,000 participants countywide.

For a complete listing of events, pick up a summer reading calendar, available this week at library branches.
