* ANGELS: Kelly Gruber's single in the second inning against the Tigers was his first hit of the season. He came off the DL last week.

* ATHLETICS: Rickey Henderson batted third, the first time he hasn't hit leadoff since Sept. 14, 1987, when he batted fourth as the Yankees designated hitter.

* BLUE JAYS: Toronto has registered 18 multi-homer games this season.

* INDIANS: Albert Belle can return to the Cleveland lineup today. He was suspended from the three weekend games for charging the mound against Kansas City's Hipolito Pichardo last month. . . . Carlos Baerga singled in the fifth, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

* ROYALS: George Brett left yesterday's game shortly after fouling a ball off his right foot in the second inning. X-rays were negative, and he was listed as day-to-day.

* TIGERS: Detroit pulled off a rare combination in the third inning when they hit for the cycle with four batters. With one out, Travis Fryman singled, Cecil Fielder homered,Kirk Gibson doubled and Chad Kreuter tripled. . . . Before yesterday, the Tigers hadn't scored six or more runs since May 20, a span of 15 games. . . . Yesterday's crowd of 30,732 was the largest at Tiger Stadium since Opening Day.

* TWINS: Dave Winfield went 1-for-4 in his first start since last Tuesday. Winfield is in a 7-for-44 slump. . . . Rookie Dave McCarty singled in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He's hit in 16 of 17 games since he was promoted from the minors. . . . The Twins have won eight of their past 10, after an eight-game losing streak. Credit the Indians: the turnaround began when the Twins swept three from Cleveland last weekend at the Metrodome and continued with two wins in their three games at Cleveland this weekend.

* WHITE SOX: Manager Gene Lamont says Carlton Fisk will catch only sparingly. "I know he's only five games away from Bob Boone's all-time mark (2,225), but he'll be catching from time to time. I can't tell anybody any exact number."
