Fire damage to house put at $100,000

A fire ignited by a cooking mishap engulfed an Ellicott City house yesterday, causing more than $100,000 in damage but no injuries, state fire officials said.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 10:56 a.m. at a two-story frame house in the 3900 block of Old Columbia Pike, in western Howard County, said Faron Taylor of the state fire marshal's office.

The house was occupied by Erin Alban and her three children, ages 2, 10 and 12. All escaped without injury, officials said.

Ms. Alban and her father, who lives nearby, were unable to control the spread of the blaze, and the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. About 45 firefighters had the blaze under control in 30 minutes.

Mr. Taylor said the fire began in the kitchen, where Ms. Alban was cooking french fries.
