One coach's group matured as a team; one player dominated the scene.

For their respective efforts, Fallston coach Mark Puckett and Edgewood outfielder Jamie Coons have been selected as The Baltimore Sun's Harford County baseball Coach and Player of the Year.

"I thought we'd be strong, but I did not expect us to be this good," Puckett said of a 20-3 team that went unbeaten in the county and racked up 17 consecutive victories before losing in the state Class 1A semifinals to defending champion Brunswick, 6-1.

"We had a lot of potential and the players developed a great deal."

In fact, they developed to the point where five members are on the All-County first team.

Coons, blessed with speed and power, made a shambles of the statistical races. He led the county in four offensive categories, hitting .514, with 36 hits, 33 runs, and 37 stolen bases. Additionally, he equaled the county high with three home runs, giving him a career total of 13.

Fallston's 1993 season was the most successful for Puckett, who just completed his eighth year as head coach. "It was a building process," he said. "The first four years were a struggle at times, but the last four have shown more consistent progress."

A year ago, the Cougars were 16-5 and lost to eventual finalist Joppatowne in a regional final.

"When I came, only a handful played in the summer. Now, practically everybody plays in the summer, and you can't beat that kind of experience," Puckett said.

Puckett, a Virginia native and a graduate of Bridgewater College, considers baseball his first love to the extent he plays in the county's unlimited league.

"You're reminded it is a tough game. You can't play it to perfection, and it keeps in mind there is a limit," he said. "I think playing helps my coaching, because I have a better understanding of my players and haven't lost touch with the feelings players have, or the way a player thinks."

The thoughts of players were instrumental in Edgewood's turnaround and helped Coons improve his own play.

"We had a better attitude and were more relaxed this year," he saidof the Rams going from 7-11 to 14-6. "Last year, we felt a lot of pressure. This time, there wasn't as much pressure, and we were a better team for it."

This marked the third straight year Coons (6 feet, 175 pounds) hit over .400, and some of his improved physical skills were the result of last fall's schedule with the Oriolelanders, a team of some of the best area high school players that played against college teams.

He honed his mental outlook during the winter, when he started at guard on Edgewood's state semifinal basketball team.

Focusing on that situation helped calm him down, and, as his coach, Kevin Tyree, said. "He earned the starting role and prided himself on his defense. He found a role, and it has carried over to his baseball."
