Barger's goal boosts Bays, 1-0

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Joe Barger scored with five minutes left in regulation to lift the Baltimore Bays to a 1-0 victory over the Columbia Spirit in a United States Interregional Soccer League game last night.

Barger, a midfielder who played at Fallston High and Loyola College, scored off a free kick with an assist by midfielder John Stroud.

After being outshot by the Spirit 8-4 in the first half, the Bays (3-6) managed 12 shots on goal in the second half to seven by Columbia (2-6).

Zach Thornton (Essex Community College) was outstanding in goal for the Bays, stopping 14 shots for his first professional shutout.

The Bays, in sixth place, next play the last-place Charleston Battery at UMBC Stadium on June 20. Baltimore defeated Charleston, 3-2, in an earlier meeting this season.
