Pat Brady, a last-minute fill-in from Reidsville, N.C., combined with new-found partner David Lind of Chicago for rounds of 69-67136 and a one-stroke lead among 20 teams competing in the third annual Chesapeake Cup at Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday.

The format called for a better-ball in the morning and a selected-drive, alternate shot in the afternoon, with the top two pairings among six who improved in the second round.

David Eger-Mike Bodney, a first-time entry but one of the pre-event favorites, lived up to their advance billing with rounds of 72-65137. The total left them one stroke off the lead and two ahead of Jay Sigle-Bob Young, 68-71139.

The tournament concludes today with a team's scoring based on the aggregate total of the two players.

Lind and Brady met for the first time Friday morning at BWI Airport and got in an afternoon practice round ahead of the competition.

They combined for five birdies and three bogeys in fashioning their opening 69, then turned it on. They had six birdies and a bogey on the front nine in turning 5-under par.

Coming back, "We just played solid, and were never in trouble," Brady said. The side included one birdie and two bogeys, including a three-putt at the closing hole.

Eger-Bodney did not putt well in shooting 72 in the morning, but heated up in the afternoon with 4-under 31 on the back nine and 2-under 34 on the front. Neither had seen the course before a Friday practice round.

For their opening nine, they struck their approach shots within 15 feet -- four times Eger hit wedge shots from up to 75 yards away that stopped within six feet of the hole.
