Detroit Tigers -- Activated P John Doherty from the 15-day DL. Placed OF Rob Deer on the 15-day DL.

Oakland Athletics -- Activated P Curt Young. Returned C Henry Mercedes to the minor leagues. Moved P Dave Zancanaro to the 60-day DL.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Signed OF Charles Peterson, 1B Charles Rice, 2B Derek Swafford, P Kerry Ward and P Joe Serna.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Placed P Omar Olivares on the 15-day DL. Called up P Tom Urbani from Triple-A Louisville.

San Francisco Giants -- Placed IF-C Craig Colbert on the 15-day DL. Moved IF John Patterson from the 15- to the 60-day DL. Purchased the contract of C Andy Allanson from Triple-A Phoenix.

NFL -- Announced that an arbitrator granted Cincinnati Bengals WR Eddie Brown free-agent status.

Chicago Bears -- Waived LB Ron Rivera, G Mark Govi and S Stephon Pace.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed WR Mark Clayton. Waived WR Tyrone Shavers, WR Anthony Tatlton and OL Steve Slay.

Los Angeles Rams -- Signed WR Sean LaChapelle.

Miami Dolphins -- Agreed to a two-year, $1.4 million contract with free-agent DT Mike Golic.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Waived QB Bubby Brister, the team's starter from 1988 to 1991.


Brazil -- Added F Rai and F Muller for the U.S. Cup tournament that starts tomorrow in New Haven, Conn.
