Brown goes out a winner 1993 ALL-CARROLL COUNTY BOYS LACROSSE TEAMS Coach of the Year

It appeared to be just another highly successful season for the South Carroll Cavaliers.

A 12-2 record, their seventh straight county title and another region playoff appearance. But it was a bit more than that for coach Gene Brown, who stepped down after 15 years at the helm.

Brown, who leaves as The Baltimore Sun's 1993 Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year in Carroll County, replaced a legend in Ken Parker as the Cavaliers football coach last fall. Next spring, it will be someone else's turn to replace a coach who enjoyed much of the same kind of success Parker did.

Brown compiled a 139-56 record and 10 county titles in 15 years as lacrosse coach. He also leaves a string of eight consecutive playoff appearances to go along with seven straight county titles.

Coaching football and lacrosse was too much to handle, so Brown knew going in that it would be his last season as lacrosse coach.

"Any time you leave a great group of kids like this it's going to be hard. We set two goals going into the season and they were to win the county championship and make the playoffs," Brown said.

"Knowing it was my last season, I wanted to go out on a high note and it was pretty special. It's quite an accomplishment for our school to win seven [county titles] in a row."

Brown and the Cavaliers again withstood every challenge from their county opponents.

The biggest challenge came from Westminster, which visited in mid-April with a 4-0 record. The Cavaliers quickly brought the Owls down to earth with a 9-4 win that typified the Cavaliers during Brown's tenure -- defense first.

"When you talk defense, most people think it's just three players and the goalie. At South Carroll, it's all 10 players," Brown said.

Brown will be missed next spring.

"He's a great leader and role model for all of us," said senior co-captain Geof Weisenborn. "You just can't say enough about what he's done for South Carroll lacrosse."
