4-vehicle crash causes minor injuries

June 03, 1993

A garbage truck overturned on top of a Ford pickup in Jessup yesterday in a four-vehicle collision that caused only minor injuries, Howard County police said. The accident occurred at 11:15 a.m. when the garbage truck, which was heading north on U.S. Route 1, collided with a Subaru that was turning left on Route 1 from Montevideo Road, police said.

The truck then crossed into the southbound lanes, striking a Toyota, continuing along the roadside and up an embankment before overturning on top of the southbound pickup truck, police said.

A passenger in the pickup truck, Betty Carole Martin, 51, of the 6400 block of Loudon Ave. in Elkridge, was flown by state police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after the accident, police said. She was treated for leg injuries and released, officials said.

The Browning Ferris Industries truck driver, Thomas Andrew Cuthrell, 30, of the 11000 block of Powder Run in Columbia, was not injured, police said. The driver of the 1991 Subaru Loyale refused treatment at the scene. Two occupants in the 1992 Toyota Camry were taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital, where they were treated and released, police said.
