Chicago Cubs -- Traded P Heathcliff Slocumb to the Cleveland Indians for SS Jose Hernandez.

San Diego Padres -- Sent C Pedro Lopez from Double-A Wichita to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and C Lee Henderson from Rancho Cucamonga to Wichita.

San Francisco Giants -- Activated IF Steve Scarsone from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Phoenix. Sent OF Dave Martinez to Phoenix on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

Atlanta Hawks -- Named Lenny Wilkens coach.

Colleges

Sunshine Football Classic -- The former Blockbuster Bowl will match the fifth-place team in the Southeastern Conference against a representative of the Big East each of the next two years. The agreement allows the South Florida game to select an SEC team after the Sugar, Citrus, Gator and Peach bowls. The top two teams in the Big East are committed to the Bowl Coalition. The Sunshine Classic has first pick among remaining teams.

South Carolina -- Announced that former Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers will return to his old school to become an assistant to recruiting coordinator Clyde Wrenn.
