City police responding to a report of gunfire in the 4100 block of Mountwood Road in the southwest section early today found the body of an unidentified man slumped behind the steering wheel of a rented car.

Police said the man, who had no identification on him and appeared to be in his mid- to late 20s, had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office on Penn Street, where an autopsy is to be performed today and fingerprints will be taken in an effort to identify him.

Police said Southwestern District uniformed officers found the man seated in a 1993 Toyota Camry parked in an alley behind the 4100 block of Mountwood Road shortly after 1 a.m.

Residents reported hearing several gunshots but no one saw anyone fleeing the scene.

Police said it appeared the man was shot by someone standing outside the open passenger window of the car, which had Virginia license plates.

It was not immediately known if the car was rented to the victim.

ZTC Police knew of no motive for the man's slaying and asked that anyone having information about the case call the homicide division at 396-2100.
