Rev. James Talley, 81, was pastor for 42 years

The Rev. James Holloway Talley, a retired United Methodist pastor who served for 42 years at churches in Baltimore and in Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties died April 29 of cancer at Carroll County General Hospital.

He was 81 and lived in Woodbine.

Mr. Talley retired in 1979 after nine years as pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy.

He previously was pastor at the West Baltimore and the Caroline Street United Methodist churches in Baltimore, and Mount Olive United Methodist Church in Randallstown.

Mr. Talley also served at the Centre, William Waters and Friendship United Methodist churches in Harford County; and the Emory, Wesley, Pleasant Grove and Boring United Methodist parish in Baltimore County.

Born in Princeton, Ky., he graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College and the former Westminster Theological Seminary, now the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. He attended a seminar at Yale University about helping people deal with alcohol abuse.

He was active on committees that helped establish general hospitals in Carroll County in the late 1940s and in Baltimore County in the early 1960s. He was chaplain for several volunteer fire departments and was a visiting clergy member for Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1950 to 1968.

In the 1960s, he was active in a Harford County peace group that opposed the Vietnam War.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Marie Cornelius; two sons, James F. W. Talley of Woodbine and Joie A. Talley of Sykesville; and four granddaughters.
