Park work to begin in July
Work on the new Sykesville Park should begin in July, says Carroll Recreation and Parks Director Richard J. Soisson.
Mr. Soisson said at the Recreation and Parks Board meeting this week that he will recommend acceptance by the county commissioners of a $556,700 bid from C.J. Miller Inc. of Hampstead to build the park.
The company Tuesday submitted the low base bid for the project, which county engineers estimated would cost $650,000.
The county received four other bids ranging from $596,465 to $1 million.
The 90-acre park will be off Raincliffe Road just outside the town limits. It will have five ball fields, two multipurpose fields and a system of trails.
Johnson is chosen new council president
The changing of chairs and titles continued in Sykesville as the Town Council elected a new president and Mayor Kenneth W. Clark swore in three recently elected members Monday.
After deciding the oath-taking should proceed alphabetically, the new mayor swore in the newest councilman, Garth Adams, followed by Eugene E. Johnson and Julie Kaus. Mr. Johnson is beginning his third term, Ms. Kaus her second.
Before the meeting could proceed, the council had to select its new president. Mr. Clark's election as mayor left that position open.
Councilman Jonathan Herman nominated Mr. Johnson to replace Mayor Clark as council president, and the council voted unanimously for the nomination.
