NASCAR -- Winston Cup driver Kyle Petty and car owner Felix Sabates announced they have signed a deal that will keep the No. 42 Pontiac sponsored by Mello Yello until 2000.

Baseball

NL -- Suspended New York Mets 3B Howard Johnson for three games and fined him an undisclosed amount for bumping umpire Jerry Layne and grabbing his arm in an argument during a game Friday. Also awarded the Pittsburgh Pirates a draft choice between the first and second rounds as compensation for the San Francisco Giants' signing of free agent Barry Bonds.

Cincinnati Reds -- Recalled OF Gary Varsho from Triple-A Indianapolis. Sent former Orioles OF Keith Hughes to Indianapolis.

New York Yankees -- Placed OF Danny Tartabull on the 15-day DL. Recalled OF Hensley Meulens from Triple-A Columbus.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Activated C Todd Pratt, once property of the Orioles, from the 15-day DL. Sent C Doug Lindsey to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

CBA -- Approved the relocation of the Capital Region (N.Y.) Pontiacs to Hartford, Conn., for the 1993-94 season.

Army -- Named David Laton men's assistant basketball coach.

Radford -- Announced the resignation of lacrosse coach Steve Billings.

Texas A&M -- Declared LB Jesse Cox and WR Brian Mitchell ineligible to play football for accepting improper payments from a prominent Dallas booster.

Football

Houston Oilers -- Signed DT James Atkins, C Turk McDonald and CB Stephen Harris.
