May 27, 1993|By Staff Report

A 54-year-old bicyclist was killed when he was struck from behind along state Route 216 at the Interstate 95 interchange in North Laurel yesterday morning, county police said.

William Earl Shenk, of the 13900 block of Wayside Drive in Clarksville, was taken to the Greater Laurel-Beltsville Hospital and then flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died at 9:58 a.m., police said.

Mr. Shenk, who was wearing a safety helmet, was struck by a 1988 Honda Civic driven by Salvatore Paul Trapani 3rd, 34, of the 9800 block of Rain Leaf Court in Columbia, at 7:18 a.m., police said.

Mr. Trapani was traveling east on Route 216, approaching the ramp to I-95's southbound lanes, when he struck Mr. Shenk, who also was going east, police said. Mr. Trapani told police that he did not see the cyclist.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Louise Runion, a neighbor and friend of the Shenk family, said Mr. Shenk was an avid bicyclist.

"He never got off his bicycle," Mrs. Runion said. "He was always riding."

Mr. Shenk and his wife, Ginny, have two children, a daughter in Alaska and a son in Colorado, Mrs. Runion said. Mrs. Shenk was visiting their daughter at the time of the accident.

Mr. Shenk was a meteorologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, a Goddard spokesman said.
