With summer comes a change of pace Notebook

RUNNING

*TC Sure, the Baltimore Road Runners Club will have its Lady Avia 5K, the Annapolis Striders its Annapolis Ten-Mile Run and the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club its Bel Air Town Run 5K at their traditional early morning Sunday starts, but come the summer months, many of the area's running clubs go to something different.

Evening runs . . . often on the track . . . and during the week.

Beginning June 17 and continuing through Aug. 19, the Annapolis Striders will hold their Summer Fun Run Series on Thursday evenings at Bates Track in Annapolis.

The Baltimore Road Runners Club commences its annual four-part Summer Track Series June 23 at Catonsville High School.

And the Westminster Road Runners Club begins its six-part Twilight Series on June 3 with its Two-Mile Track Run at Western Maryland College.

The reasons for the evening departure are obvious to those who run through the summer: Increased daylight hours give runners additional time to train, evening runs are cooler and track work improves a runner's speed and stamina for the fall season.

Says the Annapolis Striders' Evan Thomas about the club's 6 p.m. starts: "It gives people time to get home from work and it's a little cooler."

The Annapolis program begins with a one-mile fun run and is followed by a four-miler.

Fun is always the order of the evening.

"We always have the kids run first," Thomas says. "It's always followed by watermelons and ribbons. Some days, they might even get a whistle from my bag of goodies."
