Bodies of man, woman found

Authorities believe a West Columbia man shot a woman to death in Montgomery County yesterday then killed himself.

Franklin Helmuth Vargas, 45, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head at 8:55 a.m. in a house in the 11000 block of Dark Fire Way in West Columbia, Howard County police said. They said the wound was self-inflicted.

Mr. Vargas was a suspect in the slaying of Sylvia Antezana, 37, who was shot to death in the basement of her townhouse in Layhill yesterday morning, Montgomery County police said.

The two victims were acquaintances and Montgomery police said Mr. Vargas drove Ms. Antezana to work each day.

Ms. Antezana's body was found by a neighbor who went to her apartment after hearing the cries of her 4-year-old son, Montgomery police said. Her other child, a 10-year-old daughter, was found handcuffed to a support post inside the home, police said. Neither child had been physically harmed.

Montgomery police were uncertain of a motive for the woman's slaying.
