Achievement award goes to Cable Eight producer

Margaret Kahlor, producer/director at Howard Community College's Cable Eight, has been named the state of Maryland's 1993 TRIO Achiever.

TRIO is a federally funded group of programs, including Upward Bound, Talent Search, the Ronald E. McNair Program and Educational Opportunity Program, that assists disadvantaged students, students with disabilities and first generation college students in achieving their educational objectives.

The award is based on the student's ability to achieve against personal odds in academics, at work and in the community.

Ms. Kahlor, a former Student Support Services participant, was diagnosed as learning disabled in 1986 when she was a student at HCC.

Support Services created a program that provided her with intensive tutoring and counseling.

She graduated from HCC in 1988 and received a bachelor of arts degree in film/video production from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Since 1992, Ms. Kahlor has worked as a producer/director for Cable Eight. In February, she presented a one-woman environmental art exhibit, "Changes Needed, Please Apply."

In 1991 and 1992 she won the People's Choice Award at HCC's Environmental Art Show. She has also received several video production awards, including the Women in the Director's Chair Award in 1991, First Place in the UMBC Student Show in 1990 and Finalist in the Educational Video category at the International Film and Video Festival in 1990.

Ms. Kahlor will be working during the summer on a documentary about Liberia with HCC assistant professor of theater Dr. Dawn Barnes, and is nearing completion of her first novel.
