Undaunted by last week's loss in the county finals, Sout Carroll's Amber Clutter and Nikki Robitaille regrouped to win the girls doubles title at the District V tennis tournament yesterday at Howard High.
The unseeded Cavaliers topped Westminster's fourth-seeded team of Kristi Mattai and Laura Shoffner, 6-2, 6-3, avenging their 6-1, 6-3 defeat last Saturday.
Both teams will participate in the state tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Essex Community College.
"Amber and I had a great tournament. We played well on Friday, and I think that carried over into today," said Robitaille.
Liberty's second-seeded boys doubles team of Chris North and Mike Szymanski earned an alternate spot for the states by placing third. The county champions upended Mount Hebron's Dorian Kurz and Mickey Chawla, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the consolation match.
North Carroll's Craig Eckard made a decent showing during the two-day tournament, reaching the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual third-place finisher Greg McGuffin of Arundel, 7-5, 6-2.
Other quarterfinalists included Westminster girls singles player Mandy Koenig (third seed), who was eliminated by Hammond's Keely Alexander, 6-0, 6-2, and the Owls' unseeded boys doubles unit of Eric Hockstra and Dan Minor.
