DINING OUT -- THE CRITIC'S REPORT

May 22, 1993|By ELIZABETH LARGE | ELIZABETH LARGE,Restaurant Critic

Milton Inn, 14833 York Road, Sparks, (410) 771-4366. If you like candlelight dinners, firelight and period appointments, there's nowhere better in the area to celebrate an occasion or impress someone important. Or, for that matter, just to enjoy good food. Chef Mark Henry's food lives up to the setting; the menu is small and changes frequently. Almost everything on it appeals -- the dishes sound intriguing but not strange, like a first course of wild rice and corn waffles with smoked salmon and creme fraiche. The biggest problem with the Milton Inn is that it's been discovered. You may have to wait weeks for a reservation on a Saturday night. $$$ -- expensive. (Last reviewed 4/93.)

Souris' Saloon, 537 York Road, (410) 296-1997. Souris' food is classic saloon food, with a few exceptions. You can get burgers and nachos and potato skins, club sandwiches and hot crab dip. It's hard to make any generalizations about it based on our meal -- which was too uneven -- but I can say I've had worse food for a lot more money. My recommendations would be the Greek salad, jerk chicken appetizer and grilled petit filet mignon, a steal at $7.95. It's a pleasant place to be, and the people who work there are friendly. $ to $$ -- inexpensive to moderate. (Last reviewed 4/93.)
