Council takes up Kinder Rd. widening

The Greater Severna Park Council is trying to resolve a controversy over a proposed widening of Kinder Road that has )) divided the community.

The council met recently with Catherine Beverly, president of the Chartwell Community Association; representatives of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club and the county's Office of Planning and Zoning, and County Councilwoman Diane Evans.

Pat Troy, council president, emphasized that the council has not taken an official position.

"As intermediaries, our feeling was we want to keep this project alive, make sure what's done is done for safety and preserve the character of the community," she said.

The county and many Chartwell residents support widening a dangerous stretch of hilly road that dead-ends in the Chartwell community.

Other residents, including members of the Chartwell Golf and County Club, consider the road change intrusive and a threat to the community's peace and charm.

"I'm optimistic this thing will be worked out through the system," Ms. Troy said. "We want to see if there's some middle ground between throwing down some asphalt and a complete redesign of the road."

Arnold students named to college 'Who's Who'

Two Arnold residents have been named to the 1993 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges."

Martin Gallagher and Jennifer Behn are among four county students attending Anne Arundel Community College who have received the honor.

A second-year student, Mr. Gallagher is in the general studies program. Ms. Behn is a liberal arts major.

The directory features students selected from more than 1,400 colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Students are selected based on academic achievement, community service, leadership and potential for success.
