O's promote Moyer for today's start

Left-hander Jamie Moyer will be added to the Orioles' roster i time to start this afternoon's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Moyer replaces Arthur Rhodes, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday and is expected to be out four to six weeks. Moyer earned his promotion on the strength of a 6-0 record and 1.67 ERA with Triple-A Rochester.

The Orioles delayed announcing a decision on Moyer because their plans could have been altered by a postponement during the Cleveland series. If today's game should be rained out, Moyer would not be activated and the Orioles most likely would make a temporary move until his turn came up next week.

Moyer, 30, was signed by the Orioles as a minor-league free agent last winter and came to camp as a non-roster player. He is the International League leader in ERA and is tied for the lead in wins.

A veteran of almost five years with St. Louis, Texas and the Chicago Cubs, Moyer has a 34-54 big-league record.
