Steer hit by car on Route 140 is killed; driver unhurt

A steer that ran across Route 140 near Sandymount Road was struck and killed by a motorist about 1:20 a.m. yesterday.

Dennis John Gray of Catonsville was driving south on Baltimore Boulevard when the animal ran in front of him.

State police said the driver was not injured, but the 1990 Ford Aerostar he was driving had to be towed because of damage to the front.

Police did not know the owner of the steer.

POLICE

* Westminster: A Hacienda Court resident reported to police that someone using a sharp object scratched the side of her car while it was parked Tuesday at Cranberry Mall. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

Since May 1, seven automobiles have been damaged in the Westminster area by someone scratching the sides. The total damage to five of the cars amounted to $3,375. Damage to the other two cars was unknown or unreported.

A Taneytown resident told police that the driver's window was damaged while his car was parked in the area of South Center Street on Tuesday. Damage was estimated at $150.

A Cumberland resident told police someone damaged the lock assembly on his vehicle while it was parked at Western Maryland College on May 13. Damage was estimated at $100.

A city parking meter was damaged when someone attempted to open the coin collection compartment Monday. Damage was estimated at $12.

FIRE

* Union Mills: Pleasant Valley responded to a wash detail on Route 97 at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. Units were out for 29 minutes.

* Silver Run: Pleasant Valley, Littlestown and Kingsdale, of Pennsylvania, units were dispatched for a report of a house fire on Arters Mill Road at 3:14 p.m. on Monday. The first engine on the scene determined the fire to be only a trash fire, and all other equipment was canceled. They were out for 20 minutes.

* Westminster: Engines from Westminster responded for a Dumpster fire on Center Street at 12:22 a.m. Tuesday. They were out for 22 minutes.
