Sykesville fireman to lead volunteer group William Gabeler ran unopposed

A veteran volunteer firefighter at the Sykesville fire compan took the reins as president of the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association Saturday at the group's annual convention.

William H. Gabeler III moved up from the position of first vice president to accept the top job. He ran unopposed.

Timothy S. Warner, chief of the Winfield fire company, became the new first vice president, with Michael R. Stewart of the Pleasant Valley fire company taking the position of second vice president.

Ralph Dull of the Manchester fire company and Glenn A. Hay of Pleasant Valley retained their positions of secretary and treasurer, respectively.

Jerry Harris of Union Bridge, a member of the budget committee, said the group expected about $2,468,000 from Carroll to offset some expenses of the volunteer fire companies this year, an increase of $149,000 over last year.

Twenty-two students currently are attending the first year of high school firefighter and emergency medical technician training at Carroll County's Career and Technology Center.

The Ladies' Auxiliary to the firemen's association conducted its annual convention at Calvary United Methodist Church in Gamber Saturday.

A memorial service honoring members who died within the last year was conducted during the convention.
