EDITOR'S NOTE

May 16, 1993|By Michael Davis

Today's cover story springs from the pages of a fascinating new book about the creation of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Even if you think you've read your limit about the new ballpark, I advise you to pick up Peter Richmond's just-released "Ballpark: Camden Yards and the Building of an American Dream."

Written as if it were one long, tightly knit magazine story, Richmond's book reveals the private thoughts and maneuvers of a core group of people who were responsible for building the most talked-about baseball park in a generation. Not the least of these characters is the woman on today's cover, Janet Marie Smith, the Oriole vice president who through forces of will, vision and persistence, got just what she wanted.
