Architect likely to enter Annapolis Council race ANNAPOLIS/SOUTH COUNTY * Davidsonville * Edgewater * Shady Side * Deale

May 12, 1993

Craig Purcell, an Annapolis architect, is expected to announce his candidacy today for the Ward 1 seat on the City Council.

Mr. Purcell, who has been active with the Ward One Residents Association and a series of town meetings on growth and the environment, will unveil his plans at 1:30 p.m. at Calvert and West streets.

He will run as a Democrat to challenge Alderman John Hammond, a conservative Republican who represents the ward, according to fliers posted downtown announcing his candidacy.

In an interview earlier this year, Mr. Purcell said he's concerned about preserving the balance between residential and business interests in the historic district.

"I don't think there's just a business community and a residential community," he said. "This city offers a lot of diversity. That's why people are here.

"The questions are, 'Are we going to be a town where people come to pick up a gift?' 'What do we want our city to be?' "

A native of the Annapolis Neck, he attended the Key School and later played lacrosse at Annapolis High School. He is married and has three children.
