Off-duty officer hurt in shootout with holdup man

May 12, 1993

An off-duty Baltimore police sergeant moonlighting as a security guard at a Wendy's fast-food restaurant was shot in the leg last night by a holdup man, police said.

Sgt. Hezzie Sessomes Jr., 47, who is in the department's community service division, was not seriously injured and was able to stand on his own after the shooting, police said.

They said the holdup man walked into the restaurant, in the 4400 block of W. Northern Parkway near Reisterstown Road, shortly before 9:40 p.m.

Moments later, Sergeant Sessomes and the gunman opened fire at each other, police said.

A suspect was arrested minutes after the shooting, and Sergeant Sessomes was taken to Sinai Hospital for treatment.
