An 18-year-old Baltimore man who committed six robberies in one week last fall in northern Anne Arundel County was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday.

Roy M. Brethauer of the 1600 block of Plum St. pleaded guilty to four counts of armed robbery and two counts of robbery in February before Judge Raymond G. Thieme.

He was arrested after an informant called Baltimore police on Sept. 23, 1992, and told officers he was responsible for a string of armed robberies in the county, police said. He was arrested by detectives when he tried to flee from the back of his house.

Police said Brethauer admitted to six robberies. He also was identified by clerks of the businesses that were robbed, police said.

Assistant Public Defender Gary Christopher said Brethauer may be transferred to Second Genesis, a Crownsville drug treatment program, when bed space becomes available later this summer.

Judge Thieme said he would consider such a transfer, Mr. Christopher said.

Brethauer had no criminal record before the robberies, but became dependent on crack cocaine, Mr. Christopher said. His supplier set up the robberies and threatened Brethauer and his family if he didn't carry them out, the attorney said.

"As far as I'm concerned, the responsible party was the one who sold him the cocaine, let him run up a tab and threatened his family if he didn't pay," Mr. Christopher said.

Brethauer pleaded guilty to the Sept. 17 holdups of Uncle Marvin's Oasis in the 7700 block of Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., and Dan's Crown gas station in the 5700 block of Ritchie Highway; the Sept. 19 robberies of Ray's Crown gas station in the 8200 block of Veterans Highway, and the Crown gas station in the 7600 block of B&A Blvd.; and the Sept. 22 holdups of the Royal Farm store in the 200 block of Oak Manor Drive in Glen Burnie and an Amoco gas station in Pasadena.
